🦶 I Think I Sprained My Ankle – What Should I Do?
A sudden twist, an awkward step, or a misjudged landing — and just like that, your ankle gives way. You feel pain, swelling, and maybe even a pop. Sounds like a sprained ankle, right?
Sprained ankles are one of the most common injuries, and thankfully, most cases heal well — but only if handled the right way.
✅ What Is a Sprained Ankle?
A sprain means you’ve stretched or torn the ligaments — the tough bands that hold your ankle bones together. Most ankle sprains affect the outer (lateral) side of the ankle.
There are 3 grades of sprains:
Grade 1: Mild stretching of ligaments, slight swelling
Grade 2: Partial tear, moderate swelling and pain
Grade 3: Complete tear, severe swelling, instability
💡 What Should You Do Immediately?
Here’s what you can do right away if you suspect a sprain:
R.I.C.E. – The golden rule for first aid:
Rest: Stop walking on the injured foot. Use crutches if needed.
Ice: Apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth for 15–20 minutes every few hours during the first 48 hours.
Compression: Wrap the ankle with an elastic bandage to reduce swelling (not too tight!).
Elevation: Keep your ankle raised above the level of your heart to limit swelling.
📝 When Should You See a Doctor?
While many mild sprains can be managed at home, don’t ignore these signs:
You can’t put weight on the ankle at all
Swelling or bruising is getting worse
There’s severe pain or numbness
The ankle feels unstable or looks deformed
You’ve had repeated ankle sprains in the past
A doctor may advise an X-ray to rule out fractures or further imaging to assess ligament damage.
🙋♂️ Final Thoughts
A sprained ankle might seem like a minor thing, but poor care can lead to long-term instability, pain, or recurring injuries.
Early treatment, rest, and the right rehab make all the difference.
If your ankle isn’t improving after a few days — or if you want to make sure it heals strong and properly — don’t hesitate to book a consultation.
